The Cambridge magazine Explorer has given some love to Spoonfed designer Mr Penfold (Tim Gresham). The magazine used Tim’s design for the cover as well as getting a full interview….
FULL EXPLORER ARTICLE… If you have been down Newmarket Road recently then you have probably noticed the commissioned graffiti on the walls of the City Life building towards the Elizabeth Way roundabout. Among all the paintings and murals there is a piece by Cambridge contemporary artist, Mr Penfold who is also well-known in the city for his instantly recognisable work for the seminal club night, Spoonfed. Explorer spoke to Mr Penfold (real name, Tim) to find out more about this exciting young artist…
How do you describe your work?
“When I’m making my paintings my aim is to make strong, colourful, sharp and striking images. I’m a bit of a colour fanatic and spend a lot of time making colours and experimenting with obscure colour ways.”
How long have you been a working artist?
“I’ve been drawing since I could hold a pen, and art has always been the biggest part of my life. About five years ago I started to realise I could make it a career when people starting enquiring about buying my paintings and prints.”
What are your feelings on the local art/cultural scene?
“There are some great artists based in Cambridge who do great work but there doesn’t seem to be huge platform for up and coming artists in Cambridge, unlike some other cities around the country I have worked and shown in. Things are starting to happen though. The guys at The Front Room Gallery on Gwydir Street are definitely pushing things forward and I had show there last year. The painting on Newmarket Road seemed to shake things up and we got some great feedback on it. It was nice to be able to do something in Cambridge as most of my painting is done in other cities. I have been employed by other city councils to do public art and it would be great if we could get a good relationship going with the Cambridge City Council and get some public art projects going.
What’s your favourite medium?
“I love working with paint, both spraypaint and acrylic. There’s something special about finally deciding you have finished a painting. That gives me a big buzz. I also really enjoy designing the Spoonfed flyers every month as that gives me the chance to play around and try out new ideas.”
Where do you find inspiration?
“I would say my biggest inspiration would be working at the Print Studio in Cambridge. I am surrounded by lots of great, established artists and work very closely with them. Working with these people always motivates me to push my work forward.”
Where can we see your work?
“The streets, galleries and the internet – www.penetpaper.com”
What have you got planned for 2011?
“My main plan is to travel as much as I can and paint the world. I have some solo and group shows in the pipelines. I also hope that 2011 will bring lots of colour to the streets of Cambridge.”
